This is a topic I've brought up and been part of several times with other members of RedRum, and I want to bring it to the forum. Basically I'm wanting to see if I'm not the only one who still finds it difficult to adapt to the street style of racing that a lot of GTA maps encourage.
My history with racing games is quite vast, but it's fair to say I've spent most of my life racing simulation style games and driving on recreations of purpose built racetracks. Even the games I played before my teen years encouraged a clean and smooth style of racing. It's because of this that whenever I race a track on GTA which runs through various streets littered with light poles and obstacles, I try to look for a racing line which I believe to be fastest as well as the smoothest whilst sticking to the road as much as possible.
It frustrates me a lot to see the fastest way around tracks on the game taking routes over sidewalks, curbs, in between light poles etc. I like to think of myself as someone who can compete at a decent level in this game, but I struggle to accept and apply a style of racing which I'm simply not used to.
On the other hand, I accept that my view on this has its flaws. Ultimately, the fastest way around the track should be all that matters. The way I view racing isn't gospel and I accept that street racing is a credible style. I'm not for one minute trying to claim that being good at GTA style racing doesn't make you a good racer. That's something I want to make VERY clear. I also accept that this ultimately comes down to my seeming lack of adaptability, but whenever I jump from GTA street style racing to a purer style (whether in game or in real life) I tend to do worse than I feel I'm capable of. Many people I've talked to about this say that I'm simply playing the wrong game in terms of what I'm looking for and I can see their point on that, but I love the mechanics of this game and it's genuinely one of the best handling racing games I've ever played. It's just a great shame to me when tracks like Vespucci Tours comes up and encourages you to take lines which cater to the bumps and obstacles rather than the racing line.
What are your views on this? Am I over thinking about a problem that doesn't exist, or have you felt something similar when playing this game? Or do you disagree with me completely and think I'm being arrogant or something? Hopefully I've explained myself well in this...
