I created two tracks last night with one thing in mind, what gives more RP when doing a race. This will help you when making custom races.
It breaks down to three things. Time, checkpoints and Length. The two tracks I created were a simple .76mile loop, one had only 4 checkpoints, one had around 13 checkpoints. When finishing the race at 2.55:00 with 4 checkpoints first place only netted 333 RP I forgot how much RP Cloud made. When doing the same track with the 13 checkpoints, I came in second with Cloud testing with me and I received 1788RP and I think Cloud got 2400 RP for it. That is almost 4 times as much RP for the same Length and time but with over twice as many checkpoints.
I decided the run the 13 checkpoint race solo past the 4 minutes mark to test out how much RP I made at this point. It came to around 27xx RP. So if I had made this race longer withe same amount of checkpoints, it would have netted me right at 3000RP.
So going past the 4min mark still helps maximize RP but it also depends on how long the initial Lap is, if it is a lap race and how many checkpoints there are in the race. If you are making a Point-to-Point race, try to maximize on the length. I would say try and maximize on the Checkpoints but I think there is such a things as going over board as I learned this early on with one of my first tracks. You essentially only want to put checkpoints at the start of every corner to signify to the racer's where they should be going. It isn't going to hurt to put an extra checkpoint in the middle of an intersection though as you also do not want to space checkpoints out too much, otherwise the racer's might start to wonder where they are going.
