Thanks for the birthday wishes Dam351! I like such a varied genre of music it is hard to pick a favorite song or even a group of favorite songs. I grew up listening to mega groups like AC/DC, Def Leppard (favorite group growing up), Motley Crue, Poison, Bon Jovi, Cinderella, Chicago, Guns'n'Roses and so on. However I also like other types of music such as Smooth Jazz, Disco & 70's rock music, Contemporary Christian, some Country and some Rap (but not the heavy gangster type). I pretty much listen to at least a little bit of everything...just depends on the mood I guess.

Ok quick story time (while I'm listening to trip music, which brought back memories of yesteryear, raving etc. Not a bad tune either Mo, I thought it might quickn up tempo, but that was nice relaxing pace right thru) So I'm driving back from Bourke 1 night a long time ago, fkn pothole bends a control arm and buckles my front rim, leaking air, spare tyre had been smoked, so had to keep buying a rim from farm or wreckers every 80 odd km (10 hr journey each way) So the wench, being aboriginal, had relo's everywhere, we end up stopping at Tamworth at her aunties for the (1) night. A few days later the country music festival was on, every body in party mode, couldn't miss checking it out as an adult. & it was fkn brilliant, ended up staying in Tamworth for 3 months. But eventually I found myself making a choice I never thought possible. Had heaps music in the car, but I noticed 1 of the lads left a country cassette in the car, which we had played on low vol while we discussed stuff like where the best yarndi was grown. So from Back in Black, to most metal music only, here I am, foreign place, pumping country music, played it over n over, even hot chix couldn't make me lower the vol. And that's when i realised in my stoned state, I like country music. And still do. But Acca still comes before Patsy n Loretta & whoever else. Listened to most of Thunder bands ^ too And nittydon I do enjoy the odd classical tune too. Vivaldi or veredy or yeah, lol (I think the drugs were good back in the day)

Hendrix.... I grew up listening to him. My Mum is of that generation, she was well into the music scene at that time. I can't see her as a fully fledged, flower power hippy, she's just not that sort of person. She often told me tales tho, how they saw Led Zeppelin and others week in week out, playing to 30 people before they went big. She married a musician, emigrated to Australia with him and his band. There she met another musician and supported him and his band with her job, that guy ended up being my Dad. The band- Radio Birdman, ended up going places too. Mum and I were back in blighty before that happened tho. I inevitably started learning guitar and listening to all her vinyl as I got older, it was all a big influence on my own playing. Fair to say that that era of music has had a large impact on my own life and my tastes in music.
Anyway, I was channel hopping last night, I can't cope with adverts and whatever is on has to be very involving to stop me turning over as soon as they're on. Bingo, Hendrix live at Berkeley on Sky Arts, I'm hooked. Live Hendrix recordings always move me and take me to a different place. Nobody made a bigger impact on me as a guitarist. I'm not much into hype or mythology, his albums don't do a lot for me and I can see quite clearly the stoned noodlings he gets into for what they are. Never been a huge fan of psychedelia. However, what Hendrix was to me is summed up pretty succinctly by one song, Voodoo Child (Slight Return). The guy was just the most raw and natural blues guitarist. His off the cuff rhythmicality and continual departures from the score are all over that tune. I once got the tab notes for that and his Star Spangled Banner rendition and had to laugh, there's no point trying to capture or reproduce what he does. He was at his best in my mind when he was jamming some blues and throwing the rules out the window, not the completely abstract departures into noise but the pieces which really show his pure connection to the guitar and feeling for the blues. Watching him play, you can see the notes just fall out of the guitar, he doesn't have to stretch to reach complex arrangements, his movements on the board and strings are all ease and unhurried simplicity, yet he plays things that would take anyone years of practice to nail. And it all flows like speech.
Obviously I listened to all sorts of things into my teens and twenties that influenced my playing, me n my mates were pretty big on thrash metal, punk n all that. We had quite a Primus slant to our jamming at one point. As for me, if you imagine Hendrix playing Mudhoney, Smashing Pumpkins or Metallica... That was where I came in.... lol.
Here's the version of Voodoo Child I heard last night that moved me to mull all this and post it in here. No video but you don't need that if you're a Hendrix fan, you've seen it all before. Here is the blues, set on fire, fed thru some fresh anti-war angst and spewed out by a guy whose 1st language could only be voiced via fret board.

Excellent entertaining piece Cuz. Hehe, I got the tab for Voodoo Chile (slight return) too. Fat lot of use that was wasn't it?. Happy to see the old boy still has his followers today. A truly innovative musical genious, with us all too briefly and gone way too long. He it is responsible for the Fender Strat propped up in my living room next to the telly where I can enjoy its timeless 60 year old beautiousness of design and ruminate about as to just why it is that after well over 40 years of trying I still don't sound even the slightest little bit like him. Still, time is never wasted when learning to play an instrument it is said, though my audience (Mrs Trak) would likely dispute this. If I could only have one. Electric Ladyland for me. A pure masterclass in electric guitar innovation and virtuosity from first to last that still totally stands up today (apart from Noel Reddings track "Little Miss Strange" of course). Also, his instrumental blues at Woodstock to round out and chill out after the Star Spangled Banner and Purple Haze blasts. An E Flat minor (i think) jam never sounded more moving, melodious, mellifluous or so marvellous. So good, it has no official title. "Well, I stand up next to a mountain, chop it down with the edge of my hand". Man, we had good pharmaceuticals back then May I meet you in the next one dude.

Like Chase n Status lots. Their performance of "Blind Faith" at Glasto (on tv ofc) a few years back won me over. Sub woofers ftw. Never heard of sub focus. Liked that. I will be checking them/him out. Sounded familiar somehow. BT?. Don't "get" arctic minkeys. Pass . Also like a bit of Pendulum as per an earlier post you made PK. Lyrics don't usually stick in my head well but "I know I could help you, I just don't fucking want to" from the track "The Tempest" on "In Silico" album did for some reason. I like a lyrical sneer I guess. Comments on Previous posters choices cos I,m bored: Dylan-The Greatest lyrical sneerer. Approve. Gomez-gotta bit of them Don. Groovalicious. Approve. Floyd-latest and likely last album a bit meh (xmas pressy) but sooo muuuch good stuff previously. "Wish you were here" a fave track lyrically and sits well with "comfortably Numb" in tone. Mostly approve. Finally, one for DeeJay, I hope. How to strangle a Strat by Billy Corgan @ 3.08

Been wanting to add something this for a while and now that I'm officially in I think it's a good time Going to go back to the original format a bit. This is the song pretty much changed music for me and still one of my all time favs. Up until this point, mid 1994, it was mostly Young MC, C&C Music Factory and MC Hammer types. I heard this on the radio one day and went out the next day and bought the CD. It's all been downhill since then This song gets me pumped no matter whatever mood I may have been in. The opening riff give me chills everytime. My current earworm has more to do with my wife and 3 year old daughter but it's a good song. Bruno has some of best baselines is music IMO. Bonus: This final one could fit into any category and closely aligns with my shift in music tastes. I hadn't heard a single note from the band when I bought the CD this song in on. I got the CD mainly because Jonathan Davis collaborated on a different song on the CD. I was hooked with the riff on this opening track though.

That's kind of funny because I heard the last 5 seconds of that song as I left work today. Gold on the Ceiling is their song I know the best. I do have both of their Rock Band packs on my song libraby but we haven't played them all that much. The last time we did it was Lonely Boy and I was playing drums after 5-6 cocktails. That's a really fast BPM song and I thought my arm was going to fall off by the end

Music is a pretty big part of my life so I'll drop some songs in here. Hail the Sun is by far my favourite band so it's hard to choose a favourite song but I've been digging this one lately.
Rings Of Saturn is also a band I really enjoy. Generally they're considered technical deathcore and call themselves "Aliencore" but this is one of their instrumental songs I was very impressed with. Here's a video of one of their guitarists if you'd like to watch some shredding
And Chon is my favourite instrumental band at the moment. I find their music very inspirational and I absolutely love the jazz influences they incorporate. If you're going to listen to any of these I would recommend this one the most. The use of harmonics is absolutely beautiful.

Felt strangely moved by the loss of Chris Cornell recently. If you don't have "Superunknown" by Soundgarden get it now and hear one of the best voices in rock ever and I know every single one of you already knows the track "black hole sun".
"No one sings like you anymore".
Night mate, Rip.

"No one sings like you anymore". Night mate, Rip. I don't frequent concerts or music festivals, but I'm so damned bummed I never got to hear Chris Cornell perform live. It's definitely pushing me to see some of my favourite acts live sooner than later. A newish track I've got on repeat is from Father John Misty. I can't help but think it could've been a track Elton John or George Harrison would write, if they were writing music in 2017. It's such a chill track, with lyrics that make you think. https%3A//api.soundcloud.com/tracks/305538897And there is a "cover" by him, that i think is pretty daft, as he sounds unmistakably like the late Lou Reed. Give it a listen or a skim.... LSD is a hell of a drug.

Hell yeah. I've been listening to Father John pretty much every day I work at the record store. I only own the first one, but have been warming up to the new one more, and should probably get the wax. That's a great song. I have been getting "so I'm growing old on magic mountain", from the same album, stuck in my head lately.

Duude, FJM's first record is my absolute favourite of his, Nancy From Now On , Hollywood Forever and the 5th track of that album are so polarizing. As for his latest record, it's one of the few albums I can listen from front to back. Just a piece of masterful music, definitely worth picking it up.
